The children led group ‘Respect Our Rights (ROR) organized the camp‘ Think for a Better Earth for Children ’, with the support of Save the Children in Kosovo and Syri i Vizionit
The children's led group 'Respect Our Rights' (ROR) with the support of the non-governmental organizations Save the Children in Kosovo and the Eye of Vision with funding from the Swedish International Cooperation Agency - SIDA, organized, on August 26, 2021 from 10:00 to 17:00 the ecological camp 'Think of a better earth for children'.
This camp aimed at providing decision-makers with opportunity of listening to children's ideas, visions and concerns about the environment in which they live. During June, the ROR Group held virtual sessions "Think about the Earth" in which dozens of children from all municipalities of Kosovo have participated. These sessions have resulted in concerns, conclusions and recommendations which have been addressed during the camp to relevant institutions including the Ministry of Environment, Spatial Planning and Infrastructure. Topics that were discussed during this day by groups of children are: Recycling, renewable energy, environmental education in schools, and water and air pollution in Kosovo. Children also had the opportunity to learn and share many experiences in promoting children’s rights as set out in the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
Participants in this camp were Mr. Mr. Liburn Aliu, Minister of Environment, Spatial Planning and Infrastructure (MESPI), Mr. Sejnur Veshall, Deputy. Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS), Mrs. Arineta Mula, Alpinist as well as representatives of children from the children's led group ‘Respect Our Rights’ and representatives of Save the Children and Syri i Vizionit. Children had the opportunity to discuss, exchange ideas and offer suggestions to the representatives of government institutions who participated in this event, to raise public awareness, initiate and implement environmental policies. These ideas were welcomed and appreciated by Mr. Ali as well as by Mr. Veshall. Mr. Aliu encouraged children to continue their group advocacy for the environment and for the advancement of good recycling practices.
Save the Children in Kosovo has been present in Kosovo since 1997, and through its mission it works to ensure the rights of all children in Kosovo. We support childrens’ groups at the local and central level by building their capacity to monitor the Convention on the Rights of the Child by advocating together with children for better funding for services and respect for their rights, including the right to live in a healthy environment.
